- Whitworth takeover | Afrocats
Afrocats will be back at the Whitworth Art Gallery during October half term with our award winning activities for children, young people and families. We'll fill the gallery with African and Caribbean songs as well as delivering our cultural and creative arts and crafts workshops. Afrocats x Whitworth presents: Shimmy and shake through the gallery May half-term 2025: Tuesday 27 Wednesday 28 Thursday 29 May Each session runs from 12pm-3pm All sessions are free, drop-in, no need to book Join us for three fun-filled days and a vibrant and creative cultural experience for all ages. Shimmy and shake your way through the gallery listening to the cultural music that will echo through the galleires. The Everyday Art School will have different arts and crafts activities each day that you can attend to let your imagination run wild. Led by diverse professional artists, this event is a great opportunity to learn about and celebrate culture. The activities are designed to be inclusive and accessible to everyone, regardless of age or experience. All sessions are FREE, drop-in, no need to book. Everyone is welcome. 'Building Stronger Communities Together' Artist vacancy We're looking for 5 artists from North Manchester who are passionate about community and bringing people together to work on our latest project, 'Building Stronger Communities Together. Are you an artist based in North Manchester? Is your art related to arts and crafts? Are you a dancer, painter, do murals, zines, collaging or more! Have you facilitated workshops before? Collaborated with community members creatively? If you answered yes then this is the role for you! Funded by Manchester City Council, Building Stronger Communities Together aims to bring different organisations that support the community together and through creative sessions find a common ground and a sense of belonging. Youth of the World is our programme of work for young people so they can broaden their horizons. We work with children and young people aged 8 to 18 from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, in particular refugees and asylum seekrs. Youth of the World supports young people to broaden their horizons, develop their skills and importantly have lots of fun We work with children and young people aged 5 to 18. They might be living in temporary accommodation, seeking sanctuary in the UK or experiencing barriers because of their economic status. Without the support of Afrocats, they would have limited opportunities to participate in activities and enriching experiences outside of school. 1322 children and young people 85% are Black, Asian or from the global majority 40% were living in temporary accomodation 10% are home schooled or not regularly in school Over the past year we've worked with Services for young people We deliver projects and activities that support young people to feel included, help them to develop skills and improve their wellbeing. Creative Expression Whether it's mark-making or hip-shaking, our Saturday sessions are full of creative energy and fun. We Lead Projects to level up leadership skills, develop confidence and empower young people to be leaders in their communities. School workshop requests Thank you for your interest in an Afrocats school workshop. Please fill in our booking form, once complete we'll be in touch so we can tailor the workshop to meet your needs. Payment Terms Payments are due within 30 days of the invoice date. There is a 5% late payment fee for payments made more than 30 days past the invoice date. Payment Processing We will send an invoice for each payment. Invoices can be paid online, by BACS, or by cheque. Once payment is received, we will send a receipt. Afrocats Workshop Cancellation Policy If a school or organisation cancels a workshop booking more than 14 days before the scheduled date, there will be no cancellation fee. If a school cancels a workshop booking less than 14 days before the scheduled date, there will be a 50% cancellation fee. If a school cancels a workshop booking on the day of the scheduled date, there will be a 100% cancellation fee. The cancellation fee will be used to cover the costs of the workshop, including the cost of staff, materials, and any rentals. If a school needs to cancel a workshop booking due to unforeseen circumstances, such as bad weather or school closure, the school should contact us as soon as possible. In these cases, Afrocats may be able to reschedule the workshop or issue a refund. Schools are encouraged to book their workshops as early as possible to secure their spot and to avoid any cancellation fees. Refunds Refunds will be processed within 10 business days of the request.

Each workshop had volunteer interpreters to support the women to engage in myth-busting, facts and perimenopause.

Volunteer roles Table Talk volunteer Could you spare an hour and a half on a Monday to support our Table Talk project? Working with women from the global majority you will help them with anything from understanding energy bills to using popular apps and how to find local events. The women would be particularly interested in learning: Tips to reduce energy bills Using Google Maps Using Eventbrite Ideas for low cost meals You would need to be available on Mondays from 11 am to 12.30 pm. We meet in central Manchester locations, travel expenses can be reimbursed. Youth of the World Saturday Volunteer We are looking for volunteers to join our fantastic team and support our Saturday sessions. Volunteers will assist our Project Assistants and Artists to deliver with the workshops and support our children . Experience with working with children is essential, desirable experience of working with neurodiverse children. Full enhanced DBS will be provided along with travel expenses for each session.
